Blog Includes Drugs, Booze, Guns, Suicide, WNBA

Pro basketball player Chantelle Anderson has her own blog over at Yardbarker.com, and lest you think it’s boring, you haven’t read her last post.

Anderson, a former 2nd-overall WNBA draft pick and college superstar, recently told readers she’s planning on writing a book, and to my delight, she included some choice excerpts - which included her smoking weed moments before a WNBA drug test, tear-filled vodka binges and holding a gun to her head at a drug dealer’s house.

Has Pedro Gone Fishin’?

The last pitch for one of the most-vital Mets ever?

It’s a bit sad when the great ones fade away, in any sport. Very few know when to call it quits, and allow us to give them a proper gushy, appreciative good-bye. Typically, with a rocking chair and another Hummer.

Most athletes keep playing until someone pries the ball from their cold, wrinkled fingers.

Pedro Martinez, a sure Hall of Famer, was hoping to be the New York Mets‘ fifth starter this season.Source: Ballers, Gamers and Scoundrels RSS Feed

Media Seems Cool With Beckham. AC Milan? Not so much.

Winning changes perceptions, amazingly.  Last July, David Beckham’s presence was an irreparable disaster.  The Associated Press reveled in the schadenfreude.  Columnists doubled down on contrived anger and jealousy.  Now, the Galaxy are going to the playoffs.  The World Cup looms.  The man decried as an evil charlatan months ago again has esteem.  It’s only natural he return to AC Milan and England, missing the first four months of the season.  We’re cool with Beckham, but the Source: The Big Lead RSS Feed

Six Years Ago Tonight: Steve Bartman Intervened

October 14, 2003. Seems like an eternity ago. This blog wasn’t around. Nor was YouTube. Twitter didn’t exist. It’s probably a good thing. If you’re up for a memory jog on what happened that night - not that anyone in Chicago will - read this. We’re slightly perturbed that there’s no baseball tonight. Thanks for nothing, MLB. The Yankees and Angels last played on Sunday … why aren’t they playing tonight? We’ll be taking it easy tonight, get boozy with our DVR and rooting forSource: The Big Lead RSS Feed

Shawn Kemp Shops at Wal-Mart

Here’s former dunking machine and habitual inseminator Shawn Kemp, shopping at Wal-mart. Remember that one time we bashed Wal-mart and said we only shop at Costco? You’d be surprised how much hate mail we received. We still feel that way, and if possible, we’ll avoid Wal-mart at all costs for the rest of our life. [People of Wal-Mart]

McCarver : Risking Ridicule In A Whole New Medium

With apologies to Peter Gammons, until Chip Caray finally records his cover of Big Black’s “Fists Of Love”, the above recording will probably be the most disparaged baseball-broadcaster/musician CD this year, regardless of the actual contents.  “If I don’t listen to the critics of my baseball broadcasting,” McCarver tells the Philadelphia Daily News’ Stan Hochman.  “Why would I listen to the critics of my singing?” Take your best shot, Pitchfork.

Alex Rodriguez Takes a Peek

Here’s Alex Rodriguez peeking out of the shower last night while Derek Jeter was being interviewed following the Yankees sweep of the Twins. At first glance, it appears as if A-Rod is wearing a shower cap. Not sure if this was before or after the MVP got bukkake’d in the locker room. The ALCS begins Friday, which means a 4-day break from Chip Caray bashing. If you’re the type that enjoys looking ahead … game three will coincide with MNF (Denver at San Diego); if there’s a gameSource: The Big Lead RSS Feed

Book: Tillman “Expressed Regret” Over Enlisting

Pat Tillman was a reluctant soldier who disagreed with the war policies of the Bush administration and wasn’t afraid to say so, according to a new book by Jon Krakauer, who reexamines the life and tragic death of the former Arizona Cardinals safety. Why then did Tillman give up millions in a successful NFL career to join the army, and then later refuse to be discharged when he had an opportunity to do so?

Video: Umpire Cuzzi Fouls Up Joe Maurer Fly Ball

Here’s the posted video of umpire Phil Cuzzi inexplicably ruling Joe Maurer’s fly ball foul last night in the 11th inning of the 4-3 Yankees win in Game 2 of the ALDS series.

(No instant replay has fans, Maurer feelin’ Minnesota)

Replays show the ball clearly landed in fair territory, bouncing into the stands for what should’ve been a ground-rule double. Instead, Maurer later singled, and the Twins eventually failed to score despite two subsequent hits that would’veSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

Phillies’ WS Ring Thief Not A Criminal Mastermind

For the second time since last year’s championship, the Philadelphia Phillies have had to deal with an incident with World Series rings going missing. And just like the first quasi-theft thing with the janitor, the case was solved relatively quickly.

(Our perp. No, really. We’re not making that up.)

So how did the Phillies figure out where three employees’ rings went? Well, it helped that they watched it on security tape. Oh, and that the thief had given them hisSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

Sick Ana Ivanovic Ends 2009 Tennis Season

Former world number one Ana Ivanovic has ended her 2009 tennis season early after an upper respiratory track infection prompted her to withdraw from the upcoming China Open.

Ivanovic has issued a statement recapping her disappointing year and her hopes for the future.
